Messy Mama’s Origin

Messy was the perfect depiction of my journey into Motherhood. After a complicated pregnancy, a rough delivery, and a long search of losing myself in my new role, Messy Mama was born.

I’ve always loved writing, and as a Stay-At-Home Mom, I needed an outlet. Reading inspirational blog posts from Mom’s who experienced my same tribulations helped me climb out of the rut and chaos I found myself in. I wanted to give that back to the new mom’s who were trailing behind me. I wanted to put my experiences out there and maybe reach someone at just the right moment, like other bloggers had done for me.

Since then, Messy Mama has gown, and continues to grow.  I am on a path to a new direction for my blog and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

Tips for New Bloggers

1. Research! Research! Research! If you are thinking about starting a blog or are brand new to the blogging community, there is an e-city of information at your fingertips that will guide you in the direction you want to go with your blogging. Take the time to dive into discovering where your blog can take you and run with it.

2. Network! Create social media platforms to promote your blog and seek out other bloggers. These people will become your greatest key to help you build and grow your blog, but be genuine. Don’t make friends with the intention of growing just yourself. The friendships I have built from my blogging community have been extremely inspirational and the amount of love I receive is truly amazing.

How long have you been blogging?

My blogging journey will reach it’s beautiful anniversary of one year in just a few months. I am super excited about this milestone and I am looking forward to where the next year is going to take me.

What is your greatest accomplishment so far with your blog or just in life?

My greatest accomplishment with my blog is that I have kept doing it for the last year, and that I have continued to do so even when I felt like giving up. Sometimes I feel like I am not where I want to be and get discouraged. Regardless, I keep pushing forward.

What one thing do you do that helps churn the blog mill?

My daughter supplies me with endless material. Being a parent is full of topics that inspires most of my topics. That and my anxiety…

If you had to blog about one item the rest of your life, what would it be?

Definitely my present niche. Parenting in general covers so many different things that I can stay within my niche and have a ton of things to talk about. Especially when it comes to the realistic aspect of parenting.

Have you ever published a post and deleted it later? If so, why?

I have not, but I have a ton of writing that I haven’t posted. I put a lot of thought into my writing and sometimes they get really personal. Sometimes I just don’t have the courage to hit publish and they sit in my drafts.

What one piece of advice would you give to someone who is thinking of starting a blog but had no idea where to start?

Research the crap out of blogging and find some great bloggers to follow.

What is your favorite social media platform to use for your blog?

Twitter is my favorite. There are some really great supporters on Twitter and I feel like it’s a great place to establish yourself to really promote your blog.

Do you read/show your blog to anyone before you post it?

I read my posts to my one year old. She doesn’t understand but listening to it out loud is helpful for editing.

What is the ultimate goal for you and your blog?

I started blogging because I love to write, but also because I found solace in other blogs when I felt alone or isolated. When other writers were writing about what I was going through, and used their platform to discuss difficult topics, it was just so empowering for me. I want to do the same for others.

If you were asked to set up a conference for bloggers, what location would you choose?

I feel like a lot of my followers are wine drinkers for me, so Napa seems like a legit place to go.

Would you rather live in the country or the city?

Honestly, I need my share of both. Some days, the calm sounds of birds chirping and being able to see the stars at night is so peaceful. But the city lights and excitement are great when I need a boost.

Passionate Creator Award

What is the Passionate Creator Award?

The Passionate Award was created by none other than my good blogger friend, Kiersty of Caffeine Chaos and Grace. She created this award for bloggers to nominate their peers who go above and beyond. Bloggers who produce a wonderful page with amazing posts but also those who are exceptionally supportive behind the scenes. Bloggers who support their fellow bloggers. Writers who express a great passion for all things blogging and the blogging community. To find out why she created this Award, check out Kiersty’s post.

Rules for the Award:

  • Thank the person who nominated you and include a link to their blog.
  • Nominate at least 3 other bloggers who have helped you make your way in the blogging community.
  • List 5 things that made becoming a blogger possible for you and/or anything you would recommend to others.
  • List 5 things you wish you had known before you started that might help others looking to create a web-page.

Thank You, Kiersty

I came across Kiersty’s page when  I first started blogging as Messy Mama three months ago. She was the first blogger to be supportive of my writing and really made me feel confident in the direction my page was going. Not only does she read my work regularly, but she continuously tells me how great she thinks I am which means an awful lot to me. I am exceptionally honored to have been considered as one of the first participants of this award. Kiersty is a beautiful Mama who is compassionate, thoughtful and inspiring. Her writing talent shines through in each of her works. Please take some time and go check her out at Caffeine, Chaos, and Grace.

My Nominees:

  • Becca of Becca Blogs It Out – Becca is a mom to twins. She’s honest and she’s relate-able. She blogs about her life as a mother, her struggles with anxiety and real life issues that she faces. She also gives great pointers for new bloggers. I discovered Becca as a very new blogger. I was drawn in because I felt like I could connect with her work, but I also looked to her site for information on dealing with my anxiety as a mother and excelling as a blogger.

  • Sonja of Too Much Character – Sonja is a heart warming, hilarious mama blogger. Her humor shines through her posts and tweets but she also get’s real about our mental health as parents. Another wonderful things about Sonja is that she is so supportive. She takes the time to interact with you and your blog.

  • Micah of ParentalGRIT – I found Micah on Twitter. Even though he had well over a thousand followers, he reached out a hand to a Green Newbie like me. Thanks to a few shout outs and shares, my Twitter followers jumped from single digits to the hundreds. I look forward to his blog posts every week and his comical perception of Fatherhood that helps make parenting a little it easier.

My Answers:

5 things that made becoming a Blogger possible for me.

  • Other Bloggers – I had attempted blogging a few years ago but knew nothing on how to gain views. Year after year of writing, my blog just hung in space. Eventually, I gave up. When I decided to start back up, I discovered how to blog posts from other bloggers. These gave great tips on excelling.
  •  Free courses – Some of these how to blog posts offered free courses to get me started. I watched as many as I could find. This led me to googling more courses and I discovered different tips and ideas I could tailor.
  • WordPress – Being a part of wordpress introduced me to other bloggers. These bloggers helped me gain a network base I could start following on social media and interacting with.
  •  Social Media – People know other people… and that goes on forever and ever. Especially people in your niche. I built an entire network on Social media that helped me build my followers.
  • My baby – I would just be Messy if it wasn’t for my little girl. All of my inspiration comes from my daughter and everything that I am learning as she grows. It is amazing how many life lessons you learn as a parent and that gives me the material I need to keep my page going.

5 things I wish I had known before I started.

  •  Legal pages are necessary! – In all the how to courses, no one told me about Disclaimers, terms of use, copyright, and privacy policies. It is important to research the legal aspect of blogging before you get your page up and running.
  •  You can monetize your blog in so many ways and you don’t have to have millions of followers to do it. Google adds and Amazon affiliate links are a great place to start. I am still learning all about this.
  •  There’s so many ways to customize your website to fit your style. You can add things, group posts together, feature certain writings. There’s thousands to choose from.
  •  Guest posts are a great way to put yourself out there. Ask people to write for your blog or ask to write for someone else’s blog. Just be sure to inquire about a fee. Some people may want to charge you for posting their article.
  •  Find a mentor – I haven’t done this yet but I think it is such a great idea. Do you follow another blogger religiously? Are they extremely successful? Reach out to them, introduce yourself, tell them why you love their blog, and ask them for advice. If they reciprocate, stay in touch. Who knows, maybe you’ll discover a Best Blogger Friend that’ll pass on any knew knowledge to you.

Blogger Recognition Award

Just two and a half months in and I have received my fifth award nomination. This is not meant to brag. Honestly, I am overwhelmed with the amount of support and recognition I have received to my blog in just the short few months since I have started it. I have fallen in love with the art of blogging. I never imagined I would already be in this position. So many of you have reached out to me to let me know that my writing has influenced you in some way or that my discussions have inspired you. My passion is writing, and my drive comes from every single person I have encouraged. Each and every one of you are the reason I keep writing!

Nomination

Thank you to Bella-Rose from blog, Thoughts With N, for nominating me for the Blogger Recognition Award. In her blog, she writes about life and her mental health. Her words are artistic and they are strung together perfectly to inspire her readers, me being one of them. She is a mom, like all of us, trying to make it through our day, one coffee at a time. Go and give this wonderful writer a follow!

Blogger Recognition Award

The Blogger Recognition Award is awarded to bloggers by their peers on the characteristics of hard work and talent. For some of us, running a blog is much more than a hobby. It’s a desire, a way of life, and an outlet. Bloggers are recognized for putting their heart and soul into their blogs and maintaining their sites. Hard work and hours of dedication we put into our writings and more hours of promoting it is acknowledged and appreciated by fellow bloggers.

The Birth Of Messy Mama

I had first attempted blogging about five years ago. I had mainly discussed animal welfare issues and talked about my love for writing. The blog went no where. I knew nothing about promoting and networking. I wrote here and there when something came to mind, but I was pretty much all over the map with my writing. I knew nothing of niches, domains, or the blogging community. I took a break to start my book. After having my daughter, I felt like I had so much to say about everything that I had experienced and what I was learning while I was raising her. It made me think that I would have loved to have someone like me, writing it all down, so I had an idea about what I was getting myself in to. The What To Expect books never tell you about the life lessons you learn while raising a child.

Wondering why some bloggers were successful and why I wasn’t, I spent more time researching and learning about what it takes to blog. It is so much more than just writing and publishing. I am still learning something new every single day.

Messy Mama was the title I gave myself. I knew I wanted to write about being a new mom, but I wanted to be realistic. I wanted to define motherhood as it really was, not what social media made it out to be. I was a new mom who couldn’t get her shit together and I embraced that. Motherhood is chaotic and it’s messy. I want other new mom’s to know that and I wanted them to embrace it to.

Advice

If you are just starting out on this blogging journey, congratulations! Welcome!

1). Read, a lot! Read other bloggers content, read all the how-to’s, read the advice, … read, read, read! Reach out to peers, introduce yourself, ask questions, and network. Domain hosts like wordpress give you access to so many other bloggers that you can reach out to. Social media is also pretty amazing.

2). Don’t give up. The first step in blogging is learning. Take time to learn all about blogging and absorb all the information on how to be successful. Take notes. Learn, learn, learn. Blogging is a slow paced process. Focus on the journey and not on the destination. There will be days when your views will be low. Don’t let that deter you. Give your blog so much love and attention because you love doing it, not because you’re trying to get rich quick.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

In five years I hope to be a mom of two, working on my third book.

What do you hope to get out of blogging?

I want my words to inspire other people. A few people have reached out to me and told me that I inspire them to write and discuss tough subjects. That means everything to me.

Who is your favorite celebrity and why?

My favorite celebrity is Will Smith because he is funny, hard working, and he doesn’t get caught up in Hollywood drama. I also love how inspirational he has been on his social media. His words are motivational and his work ethic is so very rare.

Who is your best supporter?

My best supporter is my husband. He just gets me.
After a long stressful day, how do you relax?

Wine, lots of wine. And my writing.

What is your spirit animal and why?

I’d have to say that my spirit animal is an Elephant. They represent strength and their daughters never leave them.
What advice would you give to new bloggers?

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Your words could change someone’s life or inspire them to make bold moves. There will be days when you wonder if any one is listening or if your words are making an impact. Believe me, they are. If you feel like you are in a writing slump, take a break, but don’t give up.
It’s fall, what is your favorite thing about it?

Oh my god! Everything!!! Cider everything, pumpkin everything, the colors, the crisp air, the clothes, and of course Halloween!! Everything! Everything! Everything!!
What are your top 3 apps for blogging?

I’m still learning a lot about the blogging world but the ones I’ve discovered so far are Cava, Hootsuite, and Quotes Creater.

If you could donate to a charity, which one would you?

Every year I raise money for an African Elephant protection organization called Save The Elephants, so definitely that one.

What’s your favorite scary movie?

The Exorcist

And now I nominate you…

Your words have inspired me and your blogs keep me coming back for more. You guys are truly an amazing group of writers and I am honored to have connected with you through the blogging world.
